Porsche 944 Steering Rack Removal

Converting a late 944 power steering rack to a manual rack these instructions are for my own personal use.

Use at your own risk. The power steering rack is a constant source of leaks on the front of the porsche 944 and 951. If you can remove the rack from the car you can rebuild it. At this point if you are following the haynes or porsche 944 workshop manual it will tell you to remove the stabiliser bar this may be necessary for left hand drive cars but i was able to manoeuvre wiggle the rack about and remove it on my right hand drive 944 without doing this and it wasn t too much hassle.

Working upside down in a confined space with grit and sand falling into my eyes grease everywhere fluid dripping down etc. The porsche 944 968 steering rack is prone to leakage and the reservoir frequently leaks on various rubber suspension bushings leading to failure. Removal is not that difficult but add some extra time if your steering rack is really dirty.

If you follow these instructions and damage your car yourself your dog hurt your feelings or get a busted knuckle it is not my fault. Place the car on jack stands front only or ramps. Know which part and what brand to use is critical to fixing your car right the first time. With the hoses removed you are now almost ready to begin detaching the rack itself.
